Volunteer With Good Shepherd

Good Shepherd Humane Society runs on volunteers. Since 1974, people who care about the animals of Carroll County have given their time to walk dogs, sit with cats, sort donations, and help us find homes for animals in need. Whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, there is a place for you here.

 

We welcome volunteers at two kinds of locations: our Adoption Center in Eureka Springs and our Thrift Stores. Every dollar raised at the Thrift Stores goes directly to caring for the animals at the shelter, so volunteering at either location makes a real difference.

Volunteering at the Adoption Center

Volunteer hours at the Adoption Center are daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

First-time volunteers should arrive at 12:00 PM. Your first visit includes completing paperwork and a short orientation so you can get comfortable with the shelter, our staff, and how we care for the animals. After that, you are welcome to come during regular volunteer hours.

Typical Adoption Center volunteer activities include:

• Walking and exercising dogs

• Socializing with cats and kittens

• Basic animal care such as fresh water, brushing, and grooming

• Cleaning and general shelter upkeep

• Helping with adoption events and group visits

Volunteering at the Thrift Stores

Our Thrift Stores are a vital source of support for the shelter, and they depend on volunteers to sort donations, stock shelves, and help customers.

Thrift Store volunteering is arranged directly by the Thrift Store managers. Please stop by or contact the store where you would like to volunteer, and the manager will work with you on a schedule.

Before You Start: Liability Waivers

All volunteers are required to sign a liability waiver before volunteering at any Good Shepherd location.

• Volunteers under the age of 18 must have the waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

• Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while volunteering.

Youth Volunteers

We love having young people volunteer, and we want to keep them safe. For that reason, volunteers under the age of 18:

• Are not eligible to walk certain dogs. Staff will let you know which dogs are appropriate.

• May not participate in activities that would place them alone with an adult other than their own parent or guardian.

Parents and guardians are always welcome to volunteer alongside their children.

Court-Ordered Community Service

Good Shepherd accepts court-ordered community service volunteers. Our hours are generally approved by local courts.

It is the responsibility of the community service volunteer to confirm with the court that Good Shepherd is an eligible placement and to make sure all required paperwork is complete. Please bring your documentation with you and have it signed at the end of each shift.

What We Ask of Every Volunteer

• Treat every animal kindly, gently, and with patience.

• Follow the direction of staff and managers. They know each animal's needs and history.

• Wash your hands between handling different animals.

• If you are bitten or scratched, tell a manager immediately.

• Ask questions. If you are unsure about anything, a staff member is happy to help.

Volunteer Status

Volunteering with Good Shepherd is a privilege, and we are grateful for everyone who chooses to spend their time with us. Good Shepherd Humane Society reserves the right to terminate volunteer privileges at any time, for any reason.
